FAB 4: Victor Harbor’s Lewis Horwood, Anthony McPhail, John Swincer and Malcolm Schiller with Director of Nursing at Naracoorte Hospital Pam Schubert.REGION –Victor’s Anthony McPhail proudly returned to his home town of Naracoorte after completing a marathon bike ride from Victor, which broke his fundraising goal.
Anthony vowed to donate money to theNaracoorte Hospital’sPalliative Care Unit earlier this year and did just that as his375km journey raised $3800.
”Ifeel very honoured to have opportunityto do this, it’s been a burning ambition and to know that we managed to complete the journey and exceed our target was great.”
“I know how difficult the journey is for families in regional areas like Naracoorte so Ihope this will help (in a small way)others who are suffering with cancer, their families and the wider community in Naracoorte,” Anthony said.
He’s initial target in August was $3000 which got off to a flying start after donations swiftly came through from many of his colleagues and various communities in the state.
Anthony said despite some challenging conditions, him and his crew (the fab 4) managed to make it in good time, arriving on Sunday, October 19.
His mother,Yvonne McPhail, tragically lost her life at an early age after being diagnosed with fallopian tube cancer.
“That’s what kept me goingto honour her legacy and help the patients who do it quite tough,” he said.
The ex-Naracoorte local presented the cheque to Pam Schubertupon arrival.
“As a former resident and strong family ties, it was great to honour her name, but also keep her legacy going andpresent those funds to make a difference to the quality of people’s lives,” Anthony said.
Anthony feels after getting a taste of fund-raising it gives him extra motivationto do other charitable activities.
“It’s a very surreal experience until you’ve undertaken it yourself. It’shard to articulate whatit’s like and how much of a buzz it is to achieve such asignificant milestone,” he said.
Anthony will now liaise with the hospital to see how the money can be used to upgrade thePalliative Care Unit. The registry has remained open until the end of the month to allowanyone to donate to the Naracoorte Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
