As the very first Tidy Town winnerwhen the awards commenced in 1981, Gloucester is well-known for carefully preserving and maintaining its stunning natural beauty.Claiming success over many years, Gloucester locals also took out the title in the final 2014 Tidy Town Awards before the name was changed to the Blue Star Awards.

The prestigious Blue Star Sustainability Awards recognise and celebrate the hard work of citizens across NSW who promote responsible environmental management in their local area. Locals in the Gloucester community are this year excited to be named as finalists in three categories including:

Waste Less Recycle Morefor the Majestic Family Store Opportunity ShopSustainable Systems Awardfor Gloucester’s Sustainable Futures Convention held in October last yearEnvironmental Achievement Awardfor Penny Drake-Brockman’sefforts in protecting endangered wildlife,conserving remnant native vegetation, recording valuable environmental data and engaging the community in this important work.Penny Drake-Brockman was thrilled to be selected to represent her home town of Gloucester in the Blue Star Awards.

“These awards foster pride in conserving and improving one’s home town and I’ve loved having opportunity todraw people’s attention to the need to support our bird populations, by designing bird-friendly gardens and parks,” Penny said.

MidCoast Council’s Environment and Waste coordinator (Gloucester office), Tania Parkinson, was delighted to hear the news about these well-deserved finalist nominations.

“This program celebrates town pride and community spirit and the Gloucester community have a long-standing tradition of working together to achieve incredible environmental outcomes,” Tania said.

The winners will be announced at the Blue Star Sustainability Awards ceremony dinner on Saturday,November 5 in Orange NSW.
