PRIORITIES have drastically changed for two-time V8 Supercar champion Marcos Ambrose.
In previous seasons, Ambrose would be talking about pole positions, vying for drivers’ championships and establishing Ford’s dominance.
Now, Ambrose just wants to finish a race.
The Tasmanian has adopted the simple game plan this year after making the giant leap from the national touring car championship to the American NASCAR truck series — a stepping stone to the elite Nextel Cup.
His approach is easier said than done.
After crashing out in three consecutive rounds, Ambrose held it together at the notorious Mansfield Motorsports Speedway last weekend to place 23rd after starting 28th in the almost 40-strong field.
It was a modest placing but enough to boost the confidence of Ambrose — and he will need it.
His task doesn’t get any easier on Saturday when he tackles Dover’s Monster Mile in Delaware.
The Dover International Speedway’s one mile, high-banked oval has broken the hearts of more experienced drivers than Ambrose.
Ambrose will do plenty of homework in his Ford.
He is allowed three practice sessions tomorrow before qualifying and racing on Saturday.
“When you’re new to NASCAR like me, you need all the seat time you can get,” he said.
