TRAINER Peter Moody believes the barrier draw has tipped the scales in favour of Upstaged in the Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Upstaged drew barrier five while her stablemate My First Fifteen came up with the visitor’s draw in gate 19 for Saturday’s Group One 2400m feature.
New Zealand filly Gaze, winner of the Doomben Roses last start, struck a hurdle when drawing barrier 14 in her attempt to emulate former Kiwi champion Ethereal, who won the Doomben Roses-Queensland Oaks double in 2001.
Despite the draw, Gaze remains the $3 favourite for the Queensland Oaks with Sydney bookmaker Colin Tidy’s betchoice南京夜网 with Upstaged and Zenarta on the second line at $7.
Moody has little doubt My First Fifteen has the better future of his pair but with the Queensland Oaks only three days away he favours Upstaged as his best prospect for his fifth Group One success.
“Barrier five makes it more attractive now for Upstaged than My First Fifteen,” Moody said.
“Upstaged is drawn well to get all the favours in the run while My First Fifteen will get back and will need a lot of luck.”
A total of 20 fillies will line up in the Queensland Oaks, including five maidens.
Luke Nolen has been given the ride on Upstaged.
The 26-year-old will be aiming for his first Group One success after eight seconds at the top level.
“I’ve been in Melbourne four years and Luke has been with me for three of them,” Moody said.
“He wasn’t with me when I won my first Group One with Amalfi in the Victoria Derby and it’s only been through circumstances that he didn’t get the ride on one of my other three Group One winners.
“He couldn’t make Sky Cuddle’s weight when she won the Emirates and Scott Seamer rides a lot for the owners of Ancient Song who won the Salinger Stakes three years ago.
“Luke rode Testafiable a few times last year but when he came back into work this year the owners tried different riders for a change of luck before he won the South Australia Derby last month.”
Moody believes Upstaged has improved since her last-start second to Gaze in the Doomben Roses (2020m) on May 20.
Moody is unconcerned about Upstaged handling the 2400m of the Queensland Oaks and hasn’t ruled out following the Ethereal path to the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the spring.
After winning the 2001 Queensland Oaks, Ethereal went on to win the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the same year.
