The PM’s WorkChoices are anti-social, a reader says.THE misconception that the so-called WorkChoices legislation gives employees a wide range of options in the workplace is fraught with significant gaps when protecting children, people with a disability and women.
It has come to light that multi national companies take advantage of extra working time that these people work, and do not pay them any more than the minimum wage; no extra penalties, no overtime, nothing.
A manager of one of these companies (in Albury) revealed that if these people are not prepared to “give” that bit extra then they can leave, as there will be plenty more people lined up to take over their job.
Society is indeed judged on how it treats the most vulnerable, but when the most greedy and the most profitable companies are not willing to “give” that bit extra to loyal employees, it highlights again that WorkChoices is not about choice at all, but exploitation of the most vulnerable.
The WorkChoice legislation in its entirety is aimed at allowing big companies and corporate structures to dictate its own terms of employment.
WorkChoices is not about negotiation, or bargaining for employees, it’s about the Australian Coalition Government bowing to corporations and leaving vulnerable employees bewildered and betrayed.
The fallout from this anti-society legislation will ensure the increased population of the working poor.
That is a legacy that we can thank John Howard for.
