Primary school champs decided

Devonport-based schools were the big winners on the weekend as Basketball Tasmania held its North-West regional primary school tournament.

Forty teams took part in seven different divisions, with games taking place across stadiums in Wynyard, Somerset, Burnie and Penguin.

In the Junior Girls Division 1 final, Devonport’sOur Lady of Lourdes proved too strong for Burnie Primary, coming away with a 26-10 victory.

Smithton’s St Peter Chanel also had a comfortable win in the Junior Girls Division 2 decider, accounting for Wynyard’s St Brigid’s 21-6.

The closest grand final of the weekend came in the Junior Boys Division 1 section, with Burnie’s Stella Maris edging out Ulverstone’s Sacred Heart 45-43 in a high-scoring game.

It was an all-Devonport affair in the Junior Boys Division 2 final, with Spreyton Primary easily claiming the honours over Miandetta Primary, 38-16.

In the senior section for children in grades five and six, Our Lady Of Lourdes emerged victorious after a hard-fought 23-17 win over Stella Maris in the onlygirls division.

The Senior Boys Division 1 finalpitted Our Lady of Lourdes against Boat Harbour Primary.It was all one-way traffic for the Our Lady of Lourdes team as they enjoyed an emphatic 62-23 victory to collect its third title of the tournament.

Spreyton Primary also walked away with multiple triumphs as it held off the challenge from Port Sorell Primary in the Senior Boys Division 2final, winning 47-30.

The top three teams in each division will now head Launceston on November 16-17 for the State Primary School championships, where they will face off against the best sides from the North and South, who have also recently held their regional titles.

The basketball action shifts to the high schoolsthis weekend, with regional qualifiers played in all three areas of the State. North-West games will be held in Wynyard, Somerset, Burnie and Penguin.

Grand finals across all eight divisionswill be played at the Burnie Basketball Stadium from 1.10pm on Sunday.
